What is something that mostly everyone commits to during the New Year? I am sure you guessed, but its setting athletic goals. Whether that be hitting the gym after a year off, committing to go more often than you did last year or trying a new sport (i.e., pickleball). With a new commitment to being more active why not treat yourself to a new athletic outfit! From cold weather to warm whether I will cover the best outfits for your new workout routine.
Let’s start from the top down. For outerwear this season there are several go-to styles depending on the type of climate you live in. For the coldest climates a hooded puffer jacket is your best bet. You can stick with a classic black or even a sleek white puffer and if you want to be a little more daring there are some great metallic puffer jackets available this season. For a mild-climate I would go with a fleece jacket. I have had my fleece jacket for over 4 years now. It is just an easy classic that you know you will be able to come back to season after season. One thing I will note though is if you have a dog it is probably not the best to get black, these things are hair magnets! I am loving dark purple fleece jackets this season and once again the winter white is killing the game this year. They come in a full zip option or if you are looking for something a little trendier there are some fun cropped quarter zips I have seen. These jackets are best used in areas with temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. And, if you are lucky enough to be in a warm climate during the winter then you should stick with a windbreaker. These too are available in full zip or quarter zip options. Of course, the classic colors are available in these, but this year I have seen a ton of fun colorblock windbreakers. So, if you are looking to add a little color to your life this is the way to go. Now what to wear under these.
You have your outerwear piece on, now you are ready for your top options. First, for the coldest climates if you are doing some outdoor exercises you will be layering with a puffer jacket and most likely have a sweatshirt on underneath. We all know about the basic sweatshirts for working out in, but this year I think my favorite has been the cowl or funnel neck options. These are a great alternative to the classic sweatshirt and offer a little more style and warmth. My favorite workout top for any climate if you are going to the gym is a longline sports bra. These are so easy to throw on and really a no fuss situation when you are busting your butt off in the gym. If the longline sports bra is not your thing then try my next favorite which is the athletic tank with the built-in sports bra. My go-to for this is the Lululemon align tank. This comes in different necklines and lengths depending on your personal preference. The only con I have with this tank is that the bottom doesn’t have tight elastic like a sports bra so sometimes it slides up during the workout, hence why it is my second choice. And, if you are looking for the most coverage then go with a long sleeve running tee with thumbholes. I think these are much more fun if you already have all the basic running tees! Your tops and outerwear are in place, so its time to pick out some comfy moveable bottoms.
For winter there are mainly two options to stick with for bottoms, leggings (obviously) and joggers (obviously). Geesh.. haha you may have the classics covered but give your leggings and joggers an update this season. As for the matching set (my favorite) I have seen some fabulous options from Sweaty Betty. Again, dark purple leggings this season are an amazing option to have in your wardrobe. Especially since you can pair it with all the neutrals, black, beige, white, grey, navy. For patterns your easiest winter options are camo and even leopard. There is so much variety when it comes to leopard leggings nowadays. From small to large print to neutral to colorful you name it you can probably find it available in a leopard legging. For joggers there are many different materials available, so first find what one you love the most then you can have some fun with color. As mentioned in my previous post vuori makes some great joggers and I love my joggers from Athleta, they are in a mauve color. I have also seen a lot of camo joggers this season, besides that there are not too many prints popping up in athletic joggers (more so in casual options). I am hoping to see more of those this season! You are covered from head to toe in your newest athletic gear, so its time for some sneakers.
This season athletic sneakers are all about color and style! Or at least to me that is what they are all about. Is it just me or have sneakers become so much more spacey looking? I was just looking at athletic sneakers for the gym and saw some beautiful lilac-colored sneakers, but I could not bite the bullet on them just yet. I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to my closet (at least I think so), which is why I prefer a more neutral base color with some extra pops of color in the design. This is why I went with a white sneaker with blue accents in it. White sneakers can always be a little risky but with only going to and from the gym I think they won’t be too damaged. The style these days is a little bulkier, but I am hoping that means more comfortable, we shall see. I have made sure to include a couple inspiration photos for this season. I do want to see some more high-top workout sneakers become available this season; I think they would offer the ultimate support our feet need!
Okay, you are now all geared up in the latest athletic styles. Don’t forget to have a little fun with colors and patterns this season (it’s all about the colorblock!). And complete your outfits with a beanie or even earmuffs for a fashion forward athletic outfit. Let me know what athletic gear you have been wearing lately down below.
